The J.A. and Kathryn Albertson Foundation invites you to participate in The Open Book Initiative: Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol Training on March 1-3, 2004. At any time, please click on the informative links above for additional information on this event.

Training information

Goals of Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP)

1. To understand the research-based framework of the sheltered instruction approach for English language learners;
2. To become familiar with the eight components of effective sheltered instruction lessons;
3. To practice observing and evaluating sheltered instruction lessons;
4. To develop the skills and strategies for teaching teachers, coaches, administrators, and teacher educators to use the SIOP through professional development.

Training Presenter - Jana Echevarria, Ph.D.

Dr. Jana Echevarria is Chair of the Department of Educational Psychology, Administration and Counseling at California State University, Long Beach. Formerly she was a professor of Special Education. Her professional experience includes elementary and secondary teaching in special education, ESL and bilingual programs. She has lived in Taiwan and Mexico where she taught ESL and second language acquisition courses at the university level, as well as in Spain where she conducted research on instructional programs for immigrant students. After receiving a Masters Degree in Bilingual Special Education from California State University, Long Beach, she received her Ph.D. from UCLA and was one of the recipients of the National Association for Bilingual Education's Outstanding Dissertations Competition. Over the past fifteen years Dr. Echevarria has made more than 50 presentations to professional organizations, state departments of education and school districts. Her research and publications focus on effective instruction for language minority students, particularly those with learning disabilities.

Who should attend?

The following should attend this event:

  • Two Teacher Leaders from each TOBI school who want to learn more about how to provide appropriate and effective content instruction for their English learners
  • TOBI Reading Fellows
  • School administrators who are responsible for instructional programs (K-12) for English learners.

Lodging (TOBI Schools Only):

Hotel rooms will be directly billed to the Foundation. Participants can register for lodging by checking 'Yes' in the registration form that a hotel room is required. Only those participants who live 50 miles or more from the event location will require a hotel room. See the Lodging tab for additional details. If you are not from a TOBI school, please bring you

Meals (Reimbursement: TOBI Schools Only):

A continental breakfast and lunch are provided each day of the event for participants. The Foundation will reimburse up to $22.00 for an evening meal for those participants who require lodging for the event.

Receipts (TOBI Schools Only)

Please include copies of all receipts with a completed meeting and event reimbursement form. If receipt copies are not available, each participant must provide documentation of expenses by submitting a copy of the district travel voucher.

Mileage (Reimbursement: TOBI Schools Only):

The Foundation will reimburse for mileage only if a participant is traveling greater than 50 miles each way to the event. Mileage will be reimbursed at the district's rate, not to exceed 36 cents per mile. Participants are strongly encouraged to carpool.

Substitute pay (TOBI Schools Only)

The Foundation will reimburse the district for a substitute teacher.

College credit

This training will offer one (1) college credit. Credit forms will be available at the registration desk during the training.
